Virgin America dumps Adobe Flash for iPhone users
It has started, Virgin America has dropped Flash content from its new website in order to allow users with Apple iPhones to check in for flights using their mobile.
In an interview with the Register UK, Virgin’s chief technology officer Ravi Simhambhatla said, “I don’t want to cater to one hardware or one software platform one way to another, and Flash eliminates iPhone users. This year is going to be the year of the mobile [for Virgin].”
The Register reported that Virgin’s new Flash-free website is responsible for bringing in 70% of the company’s $100 million in quarterly revenues. The airline’s “crown jewels” website replaces a previous version that used Flash and was less than three years old.
iPhone launches a migration from Flash
The move illustrates the leverage Apple now exerts in being able to drive new web development to use open web standards rather than proprietary binary platforms like Flash and Microsoft’s Silverlight, which exist as closed alternatives to the Web’s simple HTML and JavaScript.
Apple itself dropped Flash from most of its web properties the iPhone debuted, and just before its launch, the company worked with Google to begin serving YouTube videos without requiring a Flash wrapper. Apple chief executive Steve Jobs insisted that Flash was simply not well suited for mobile devices like the new iPhone.
Google has since floated a beta version of YouTube for desktop users that drops Flash entirely and instead presents videos using the native multimedia delivery support written into HTML5, the latest specification of the Web’s standard for semantically marking up content.
Virgin said it is planning to make use of new features in HTML5 as the standard is ratified. Until then, company representatives said today’s HTML is “good enough” to do what the company had been using Flash to do on its previous sit

Goolge Buzz
Google just announced that it’s bringing some serious location-based integration to its services, all centered around the new Buzz social networking tool built into Gmail. Google’s going to do location better than the usual latitude / longitude coordinates — it’s able to snap those to actual place names and then take context-aware actions depending on where you are. The new location services is integrated into the main mobile Google.com search page and the new buzz.google.com page for the iPhone and Android, and into maps for Android, S60, and Windows Mobile. Buzz is rolling out starting today, and it should hit everyone within “the next few days.”

What’s to say?
What’s to say about the new iPad that hasn’t been said already? Like the iPod and the iPhone it will grow into it’s own in a year or two. Not having seen one in person I can’t review it, but on paper it’s an add on product. It will not replace my laptop or my phone, and since I have both it doesn’t look like I’ll need an iPad.
With that said it’s still fun to discuss it’s possibilities. I’ve heard sales people looking to run their presentations on it, families strapping it to the back seats of cars as a portable DVD player for the kids. Doctor offices replacing paper charts. It’s in the hands of the developers now.

ITunes 9.0.3 Update
Have you ever wished that iTunes wouldn’t constantly forget your iTunes Store password? There’s a patch for that.
Paramount in Monday’s iTunes 9.0.3 update is the fact that “iTunes no longer ignores your Remember Password For Purchases setting”. Apart from curing password amnesia, the minor update also addresses syncing issues with iPods for some smart playlists and podcasts. It also resolves a problem in which iTunes occasionally can’t recognize when an iPod is connected. Last but not least, like almost every other patch Apple has released since the dawn of time, this update addresses issues that affect stability and performance.
iTunes 9.0.3 is available from Apple’s Website or via the Software Update mechanism in OS X.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 with battery reporting fix
Apple on Tuesday afternoon released version 3.1.3 of its iPhone OS software for the iPhone and iPod touch, bringing with it improved accuracy of reported battery level on the iPhone 3GS.
The update also reportedly resolves an issue where third-party applications would not launch in some instances. It also addresses a bug that could cause applications to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard.
iPhone OS 3.1.3 also includes a number of security updates related to CoreAudio, ImageIO, Recovery Mode and WebKit. Full details are available in the support documenton Apple’s Web site.
The update for the iPhone and iPod touch operating system is available for download through iTunes.
The last update, iPhone OS 3.1.2, arrived last October. It fixed an issue that would cause the iPhone to not wake from sleep, and resolved a glitch that could interrupt cellular network services until restart.
Last week, iPhone OS 3.2 was revealed as part of the new multi-touch iPad. For now, the operating system upgrade is for the iPad hardware only, which is scheduled to launch before the end of March.
iPhone OS 3.2 offers a number of enhancements over the current operating system, including a home screen that can be viewed either horizontally or vertically. It is not yet known what additional features in the iPad version of the iPhone OS could show up in the iPhone or iPod touch.

Google unveils Nexus One smartphone
Two years ago; the day before the press launch of the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), Apple announced the launch of the iPhone. An announcement that overshadowed the rest of the show.
Today it seems that Google have done the same with the announcement of the Nexus One, a mobile phone manufactured by HTC but designed to a Google specification using the Android operating system which is being sold direct to customers by Google.
The phone is being offered in the US either on a contract with German owned T-Mobile, in the UK on the Vodafone network (from later this year) or unlocked for any network for £330. It is available to be purchased right now via the Google website and can be shipped to the UK for around £20.
